The mission
"Some food feeds you. Some food brings you home — even if you have never been here before."
AITA BEST INDIGENOUS CULINARY EXPERIENCE 2026
Chef Kaimana Barros grew up on a working ranch in Waimea, learned to cook in the tradition of his ʻohana, and spent sixteen years building one of the most sought-after culinary practices on the Kohala Coast — entirely through the recommendation of people who had experienced it themselves.
What Kai ʻĀina offers is not a catering service and not a pop-up dinner. It is a deeply personal culinary experience rooted in the land and culture of Hawaiʻi Island — designed for the guest who came here looking for something real, and deserves to find it.
The chef
Best Indigenous Culinary Tourism Experience — American Indigenous Tourism Association, 2026
Born and raised on Hawaiʻi Island. Grew up on a working ranch in Waimea, where food was not a career ambition — it was the language his family spoke. Through his grandmother Aileen, he descends from Waimea's Lindsey ranching family, the family of Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske of Anna Ranch. His heritage spans eight cultures. His cooking reflects all of them, anchored always to this island first.
Sixteen years cooking privately on the Kohala Coast — for estates, families, and guests who found him the way everything at this level is found: someone they trusted told them.
His clients have included international royalty, heads of state, Travis Kelce, and the late Lisa Marie Presley — and families celebrating a birthday, couples marking an anniversary, and households who simply wanted one extraordinary evening.
He cooks with what the island is offering that week, much of it from his own farm in Hāmākua and from local fishermen and growers.

The land
Kai ʻĀina Farm
Working farmland in the hilltops of Hāmākua. The root of everything on the table.
Kai ʻĀina Provisions
Small seasonal batches of chef-crafted provisions, sauces, and pantry goods. At the farmers market, where the farm meets the community.
The Kai ʻĀina Foundation
501(c)(3) pending. The cultural and community mission arm of Kai ʻĀina.
Every dish begins here — in the foothills of Kohala and on the hilltops of Hāmākua. The farm is not a story Chef Kai tells about his food. It is where his food comes from.
Kai ʻĀina Provisions brings what the farm grows directly to the community. The Foundation carries the mission that makes all of it matter: that Hawaiian culture be felt, not performed — held by the people who belong to it.
